How many wheelchair-accessible units does an event need?
An event needs at least 5% of the portable toilets in each cluster to be accessible, and never fewer than 1 per cluster. That rule is in the 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2. A cluster of 20 units needs 1 accessible unit; a cluster of 21 to 40 needs 2. We recommend 1 per cluster minimum, even for small parties.
| Units in cluster | Accessible units required | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1–20 | 1 | Backyard party, 3 units = 1 accessible |
| 21–40 | 2 | Festival food row, 30 units |
| 41–60 | 3 | Large concert cluster |
Read section 213.2 at the U.S. Access Board. Accessible units need a 60-inch-diameter turning circle or T-shaped space inside. This is the legal minimum; your venue or permit office may ask for more. This is not legal advice.
What are the specs of an accessible porta potty?
A wheelchair-accessible porta potty is about 88 inches wide, 88 inches deep and 89 inches tall, with a floor at ground level. Inside, it has room for a 60-inch turning circle, grab bars on two walls and a door about 34 inches clear. It weighs about 300 pounds and needs level ground.
| Spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Height | About 89 in |
| Width × depth | About 88 in × 88 in |
| Weight (empty) | About 300 lb |
| Door clear opening | About 34 in |
| Interior turning space | 60-in diameter circle |
| Floor | Ground-level, no step |
| Waste tank | About 60 gal |
| Inside | Grab bars, lowered seat, sanitizer, paper, lock with indicator |
Specs are typical for the unit class we stock and match the manufacturer data for that class. Your quote names the exact model delivered. Manufacturer "uses" ratings assume normal use between services.
Questions renters ask us
Do I need one for a small backyard party?
A private party on your property may not be legally required to have one. If a guest uses a wheelchair or walker, rent one; it is the only unit they can use.
Can it go on grass?
Yes, on firm, level grass. Soft or sloped ground can make the ramp-free entry hard to use; a driveway is better.
Is it bigger inside for parents with kids?
Yes. Many hosts rent one for parents helping small children, even without a wheelchair user.
Do jobsites need one?
Rent one when a worker needs it. OSHA counts it as a toilet toward Table D-1.
