How many porta potties do I need? Use the calculator
You need 1 standard porta potty per 50 guests for a 4-hour event, or 1 per 20 workers on a construction site. Enter your guest or crew count below. The calculator shows every step, adds units for long events and alcohol, and includes the accessible units and handwashing stations to match.
Event results use our business planning method below. Construction results use OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1 as the legal floor. Confirm with your venue or permit office.
What assumptions does the event calculator use?
The event calculator uses five fixed steps. It starts at 1 unit per 50 guests for up to 4 hours. It adds 1 unit per 100 guests past 4 hours, 1 per 100 guests when alcohol is served, and 1 when food is served. At least 5% of units are wheelchair-accessible, minimum 1.
- Base: guests ÷ 50, rounded up. (150 guests → 3 units)
- Over 4 hours: add guests ÷ 100, rounded up. (150 → add 2)
- Alcohol: add guests ÷ 100, rounded up, minimum 1. (150 → add 2)
- Food on site: add 1 unit.
- Accessible: 5% of total, rounded up, minimum 1, counted inside the total (2010 ADA Standards 213.2).
- Handwashing: 1 two-station sink per 4 toilets, rounded up (our recommendation).
Worked example (hypothetical): a 150-guest, 5-hour reception with a bar and catering. 3 base + 2 for length + 2 for alcohol + 1 for food = 8 toilets, 1 of them accessible, plus 2 handwashing stations.
The base ratio is our own planning method, built from what our drivers see when they pump units after events. Industry charts from the Portable Sanitation Association International (PSAI) use similar starting points. Peak attendance matters more than total tickets sold.
How many porta potties does a construction crew need?
A construction crew of 20 or fewer workers needs at least 1 toilet under OSHA Table D-1. From 20 to 199 workers, the minimum is 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. From 200 workers up, it is 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50. A standard porta potty counts as 1 seat and 1 urinal.
| Crew size | OSHA minimum units | With 50-hr weeks (our advice) |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 1 | 1, weekly service |
| 20 | 1 | 2 or twice-weekly service |
| 35 | 1 | 2 |
| 60 | 2 | 3 |
| 120 | 3 | 4–5 |
| 250 | 5 | 7 |

Do existing restrooms reduce how many I need?
Yes, open indoor restrooms reduce the count if guests can reach them easily. Subtract roughly 1 portable unit for every working indoor toilet that guests may use. Do not count a house bathroom up a flight of stairs for a 150-guest party; hosts tell us guests avoid it and the septic system suffers.
Split events with two areas, such as a ceremony lawn and a reception barn, need a cluster at each area. Count each area separately.
Questions renters ask us
How many porta potties for 100 guests?
2 units for up to 4 hours. 3 for 4–8 hours, and 4 if alcohol is served. Include 1 accessible unit.
How many porta potties for 200 people?
4 units for up to 4 hours. For a 6-hour event with alcohol, 8 units, 1 of them accessible, plus 2 handwashing stations.
Do I need separate units for men and women?
Not required. Standard units have a urinal, which speeds lines. Large events sometimes mark a cluster for each.
How many for a 2-day festival?
Size for the busiest day's peak crowd and schedule a service between days instead of doubling units.
