How many porta potties does a construction site need?
A construction site needs at least 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c). Above 20 workers, OSHA requires 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. Above 200 workers, it is 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50. A standard porta potty has both a seat and a urinal.
| Workers on site | OSHA minimum (Table D-1) | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1–20 | 1 toilet | 1 standard unit, serviced weekly |
| 21–40 | 1 seat + 1 urinal per 40 workers | 2 units if crews work 10-hour days |
| 41–80 | 2 seats + 2 urinals | 2–3 units + 1 handwashing station |
| 81–120 | 3 seats + 3 urinals | 3–4 units, twice-weekly service |
| 200+ | 1 seat + 1 urinal per 50 workers | Plan with us; add sinks per cluster |
Legal minimum comes from the official OSHA 1926.51 text. Our recommendation adds units for long shifts and heat. Confirm local rules with your permit office. Worked example: a 28-person framing crew needs 1 seat + 1 urinal by law. One standard unit covers that. We suggest 2 units because 28 people sharing one unit for 10-hour Texas days fills the tank before the weekly service.
What is included in a 28-day jobsite rental?
A 28-day jobsite rental includes the unit, delivery, placement, one service visit per week and pickup. Each service visit pumps the waste tank, washes the interior, deodorizes, and restocks toilet paper and sanitizer. Billing renews every 28 days from the delivery date, not on the calendar month, until you call for pickup.
- Billing starts the day we deliver and runs in 28-day cycles.
- The driver sets your weekly service day with the site lead on the first visit.
- No automatic pickup. Call before the next cycle starts to avoid another 28 days.
- Need it moved to the other side of the lot? Ask; relocation is quoted separately.
- Company card locks the order today. A credit account takes up to 4 business days to set up.
Do construction sites need handwashing stations?
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities where crews apply paints, coatings, herbicides or other harmful contaminants. Other sites often rely on the hand sanitizer inside each standard porta potty. We recommend 1 two-station handwashing sink per 4 toilets, and always where crews eat, mix concrete or use chemicals.
Read the rule in eCFR 1926.51(f). Our handwashing station page lists capacity and servicing.
Call insight: 3 of the 10 calls we reviewed in September 2026 were construction. Two needed the unit the same or next day, and one site manager asked whether servicing was automatic. It is.

Where should the porta potty go on a jobsite?
Place the porta potty on level, firm ground the service truck can reach. The truck needs a hard path and should park close to the unit. Keep it away from trenches, crane swing zones and storm drains. Give us gate codes, lockbox details and a site contact on the work order.
A typical instruction we get: "Come through the driveway gate, follow the road to the back of the house, and set it in the fork." That level of detail gets your unit placed right the first time. The full checklist is in our placement and truck-access guide.

Questions renters ask us
Can you get one out here today?
Sometimes. We check routes while you are on the phone. Normal turnaround is the next business day. When a truck is free, we have delivered by late morning the same day.
Is servicing automatic or do I schedule it?
Automatic. The driver picks a weekly service day and tells your site lead. You only call if you need an extra visit.
How long can I keep it?
As long as the job runs. Rentals renew every 28 days. Many remodel jobs keep a unit 2 to 6 weeks; new builds keep one for months.
Can we bill through our accounting department?
Yes, with a commercial credit application. It takes up to 4 business days to set up. To lock in a unit today, pay by company card and switch billing later.
Do you have high-rise or crane-lift units?
We can source crane-lift-compatible units for multi-story work. Tell us the floor count and lift plan so we quote the right unit.
Do you also rent dumpsters?
This site handles portable restrooms, sinks, holding tanks and trailers. Ask our dispatcher about other jobsite equipment when you call.
